MapAction Seeks New Skilled Volunteers

Humanitarian mapping charity MapAction has opened its annual volunteer recruitment to enrol new team members with GIS, data science and software development expertise. The data scientist role is new this year, reflecting the ever-growing importance of data analytics in MapAction’s work.

MapAction deploys teams of expert volunteers to humanitarian emergencies where they help aid agencies to save lives by quickly gathering, mapping and disseminating crucial data to help coordinate an effective response. MapAction volunteers also work around the world helping to prepare for emergencies before they happen, using their knowledge of humanitarian mapping and information management to help put in place the data, technology and skills needed. MapAction field teams are supported by a technical team in the UK, and the current recruitment round is for both field deployment and UK-based roles.

Chris Davies, director of operations at MapAction, commented, “We recruit volunteers once a year to fit specific roles and they tend to stay with us for a long time, so only a handful of new opportunities arise each year. It can be challenging and demanding work, but it’s also tremendously rewarding, and there’s a great sense of camaraderie amongst the team.”

Volunteers receive a comprehensive and ongoing package of training, including opportunities for participation at international, multi-agency disaster simulation exercises. They are expected to attend seven to 12 monthly team training weekends a year and deployable volunteers must be available to deploy for up to two weeks every one or two years.

The deadline for applications is Sunday 1 March 2020. More information is available here.
