Welcome to Plymouth
We are a world-class, modern university*. Vibrant and friendly, with a strong reputation for innovation. Times Higher Education described us as one of the newly-emerging ‘modern global elite’.
Your student experience
We are one of the largest universities in the country with around 27,000 students studying a variety of courses from farming to photography, business to biology, and design to dentistry. Our roots go back more than 150 years to the School of Navigation, but it is our modernity that gives us energy and direction. It gives us the freedom to define our strategic priorities and our values. It gives us the freedom to define the world that we will help build. We look forward.
We are one of the top 350 universities in the world*, and are 59th of those aged under 50**. We are committed to providing a first-class, first-choice student experience, enhancing employability and developing scholarship and citizenship. A twice-winner of the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education, most recently in 2012, we’ve been recognised for our innovative teaching, our impact-driven approach to research, and the way we work with partners to create social and economic benefits for our communities.
Our degrees are much more than just a passport to a career. They enrich and develop students with skills and lessons for life so that our graduates not only have an enviable employment record but also add real value to the economy and society at large, whether learning takes place in the classroom, laboratory, studio or through fieldwork, the workplace or community.
More than 12,000 of our students every year benefit from placements and work-based learning, and 89 per cent of our graduates are in employment and/or further study within six months of graduating. Our Graduate School was named as the second best in the world, and first in the UK, while the opportunities to teach among its postgraduate community were ranked the best globally.
We are a global university, one that has more than 80 partnerships in 30 countries, including China, the United States and Sri Lanka. And with our extensive partner college network across the south and west of England, we have a total of 13,000 off-campus students enrolled on Plymouth degrees.
We are the first post-1992 university to launch its own medical school. And we're the first university in the world to be awarded the Social Enterprise Mark – the only independent accreditation to highlight organisations who place people and planet alongside profit.
We are a local university and contribute a quarter of a billion pounds to the regional economy and employ nearly 3,000 people. We've invested more than £150 million into our campus over the past seven years, including a Marine Building containing one of the country’s most advanced wave tanks; a waterfront marine teaching and research station; a performing arts centre for teaching, research and the hosting of professional shows; and new medical and dental facilities.
We help our city and region grow
We are at the heart of Plymouth and play a key role in the civic, cultural, social and economic life of our vibrant waterfront city. We oversee a £100 million regional business support network, boasting incubation, innovation, and science park infrastructure, and we use our knowledge, expertise and people to help nurture enterprise and create jobs.
We remain committed to working with our community, whether providing NHS medical and dental treatment to patients; addressing lifelong learning through partnerships with the Childrens’ University and the University of the Third Age; student volunteering and fundraising; or the extensive public programme that brings art and culture to the region.
Nearly two-thirds of our research has been graded as world-leading or of international quality, making us a top 50 UK research institution according to the Research Excellence Framework (REF).
From agriculture to art and design, psychology to mathematics, earth sciences to education, we've improved our scores across the board - and were ranked first for output in Clinical Medicine.
Our reputation – in education, research and enterprise – makes it possible for us to drive change. It ensures we command funding and are sought out for collaboration. We attractstaff and partners who deliver extraordinary work – work that benefits local and international communities. We’re the overall best performing university in the People and Planet Green League, and ranked first again in 2015 - to go along with three Green Gown Awards for sustainability in 2014. Our ambitions go hand in hand with environmental and social responsibility.
