Inspiring the Next Generation of Surveyors

The Murphy Surveys team has visited Heathland Primary Academy School in Birmingham to help build awareness and inspire the younger generations to consider a career in surveying. The team hosted an interactive workshop to Year 5 students helping them to recognise and appreciate the built and natural environment around them. The workshop included a demonstration of the latest technology for geospatial measurement and mapping, including a 3D High Definition laser scanner and Total Station.

“We were thoroughly impressed with the enthusiasm and interest demonstrated by the class,” said Andrew Masters, Monitoring Manager at Murphy Surveys. “We made the workshop as interactive, fun and engaging as possible with demonstrations, live measurement scanning and a geospatial quiz. The kids didn’t hold back in their questions and eagerness to learn. Our industry and profession is changing and new technology is opening up new opportunities in 3D data capture that allow us to change the face of the often traditional reputation of surveying.”

“We’re also seeing some of the most complex and ambitious construction techniques and engineering projects right here on our door step, so it’s certainly an exciting time for the industry. With a well-documented skills shortage, we need to look at more ways in which to attract individuals to consider a career in surveying and safeguard our profession for the next generation. I was inspired myself at the resilience of the children and I’m excited to come back to continue the awareness initiative.” added Masters.

Headteacher Mr P Higgins commented “Year 5 had a fantastic experience with the Murphy Surveys team and aspirations were created towards careers that the children didn’t know existed. The pupils learned so much about teamwork and what skills that they would need to acquire at school to be able to have a job in the industry.”
