senseFly Corridor Solution Boosts Efficiency of Linear Mapping Projects

senseFly, the world’s leading producer of mapping drones, has announced senseFly Corridor, a new platform enhancement that vastly simplifies the drone (UAS) mapping of linear infrastructure and sites. senseFly Corridor will debut on 8 May at AUVSI Xponential in Dallas, Texas (booth 641). Corridor mapping is a common task for many geospatial professionals and crucial for the effective planning, design and analysis of linear infrastructure, as well as the monitoring of rivers and coastlines. However, using drones to carry out corridor projects—as an alternative to hiring expensive manned aircraft—has, until now, been a relatively complex job that contained some frustrating inefficiencies. “senseFly Corridor overcomes these... eBee X Approved for Operations Over People by Transport Canada

senseFly, the Switzerland-based fixed-wing UAV manufacturer, has announced that its flagship eBee X fixed-wing drone was approved for operations over people by Transport Canada, as defined by the regulatory body’s standard 922.06 Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) safety assurance designation. The designation is part of Transport Canada’s self-declaration process, which provides a path for drone manufacturers to self-declare the operational safety of their drones, provided the aircraft meets a series of strict requirements. To operate safely over people is an important milestone for the senseFly eBee X, and the news will be welcomed by drone pilots and operators in Canada as well. Operations Over People... (read more)

Terra Drone Launches UAV and AI-based Solution for Power Asset Inspection

Terra Drone Corporation, a leading provider of industrial unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV or' drone') solutions, has unveiled a new UAV and artificial intelligence-based solution set for the maintenance of power transmission and distribution equipment. The solution was developed on the basis of market gaps identified after the inspection of over 90,000km of power lines in BVLOS missions throughout the world. Acquired data is automatically processed and analysed by artificial intelligence algorithms which are trained to detect crossovers at the bottom of transmission lines, buildings and construction machinery. Error detection system The system identifies rust on bolts, loosening and missing tower... (read more)

Airbus Aerial Conducts Runway Mapping at World’s Busiest Airport

Airbus Aerial, the commercial aerial services, has recently conducted runway mapping and inspections at the world’s busiest airport – Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International (ATL). Officials from Hartsfield-Jackson requested Airbus Aerial conduct mapping of its south runway to help it assess the benefits of using the aerial service to conduct critical runway inspections. The airport has engaged in this work in the past but Aerial was able to provide the highest levels of data quality, accuracy, and simple cloud based tools to easily interact with and share this valuable information. The airport has held its ranking as the world's busiest airport since... (read more)

Pix4D Launches Software for Large-scale UAV Mapping

Switzerland-based photogrammetric leader Pix4D has announced the commercial release of Pix4Dmatic: digital photogrammetry software for accurate and fast corridor and large-scale mapping. Pix4Dmatic has been created to meet an evolving demand as professionals map bigger and bigger areas around the world. Projects that would previously have been mapped by aircraft are now being surveyed with drones. With Pix4Dmatic, these expert projects are made possible and easier. Large Datasets Supported Drone flights beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS), when permitted by law, are often considered the next frontier of drone mapping. Pix4Dmatic now also offers support for the large datasets... (read more)

Consolidation of AI and Autonomy - Commercial UAV Show 2018

The 2018 Commercial UAV show was as busy and wide-ranging as in previous years. Mapping did not have a high profile although some exhibitors were promoting photogrammetry and mapping in general and several seminar and conference sessions featured mapping. The overarching theme of the event could be characterisied as consolidation and looking to the future. Artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomy were strong themes, meaning the development of smart drones. This includes interaction with robots to manage battery change for example, although it is unlikely that we will see genuine autonomous UAVs very soon. But several exhibitors claim the use of... Iris Automation Reveals Turnkey Collision-avoidance Solution for Drones

Iris Automation, an artificial intelligence (AI) and safety avionics company, has announced the launch of Casia – the first commercially available computer vision detect-and-avoid solution to enable Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations for autonomous vehicles. For the first time, there's a system that allows an Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) to truly understand the aviation environment around it as if a pilot were onboard. Casia detects other aircraft, uses machine learning to classify them, makes intelligent decisions about the threat they may pose to the vehicle, and triggers automated manoeuvres to avoid collisions. Casia is a combination of both... (read more)
