NASA has announced the latest recipients from its Small Business Technology Transfer program, which functions as a R&D program for the agency. This year, 19 small research projects received up to $125,000 each, with the promise of up to $725,000 if the projects survive to a second phase. The list includes such projects as a cardboard drone, improved image processing for landers and rovers, and multispectral imaging. Kaarta Releases Stencil 2 Compact Mobile Lidar

Kaarta has announced a new version of its Stencil real-time 3D scanning system with better hardware, improved accuracy, and an easier workflow. It has double the onboard storage capacity for easier storage and reduced need to connect to an external drive. The system also records GNSS data for loop closures and geolocation, which helps correct drift when you use the system in large spaces, improving the results of Kaarta’s SLAM algorithm. Focus M 70 Lidar Announced by FARO

FARO has announced their latest scanner to hit the competitive entry-level market, the Focus M70. Representatives say the scanner, which is set to cost less than $25,000, will provide an “ideal entry point for all professional users considering laser scanning in the construction BIM/CIM and public safety forensics markets.” The Focus M 70 weighs 4.2kg, and captures 500,000 points per second at an accuracy of +/- 3mm. Aberystwyth University Invests in UAV Lidar

The Earth Observation and Ecosystem Dynamics Group at Aberystwyth University has invested in a drone based Lidar and spectral imaging package in order to enhance their research across the globe. The bespoke unit, configured by COPTRZ, is expected to significantly enhance the university’s research into the monitoring of British forests, focusing primarily on the measurement of standing timber volumes, forest biomass and carbon content.
