Cepton Develops Cost-effective Vista Lidar

Cepton has announced development on a new low-power, long-range, high-resolution, and small-size Lidar sensor called Vista. The Lidar was announced at the 2018 NVIDIA GPU Technology Conference. Vista is intended to be a cost-effective solution for those who pursue all levels of autonomous driving, active safety, or mapping applications. The 120 line scanner has a 200 metre range, 0.2 degrees of spatial resolution, and consumes less than 10 watts of power. Cepton explains that the sensor “consists only of high maturity automotive components for expedited automotive grade certification” and features their patented micro-motion technology (MMT) platform, no rotational or frictional... Mapping Canberra's Tree Canopy with Airborne Lidar

Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS) recently engaged 1Spatial, a leading company in managing geospatial data, to analyse and extract aerial laser scanning data. The project was aimed at accelerating the establishment of baseline data for the urban tree canopy coverage of Canberra, the capital of Australia. The relationships between climate change challenges, sustainability goals and community expectations are key drivers in TCCS’s development of an urban tree planting programme. Informative and current data sets are being used to inform management strategies by overlaying age, density and condition data and proposing future canopy density targets. Current baseline data The establishment of... (read more)

Holography Lidar System Enables Scanning Through Foliage

The US Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC has developed a technology that enables lidar to scan through obscurants such as foliage thanks to a holographic system built to exploit a process called optical phase conjugation. The system works by emitting a pulsed laser with pulse widths of several nanoseconds. The returning pulses are received by a gated sensor that selectively blocks the earliest-to-arrive light reflecting off foliage, and allows the reflected light that comes later from the obscured ground surfaces. “By exploiting the interference between two laser beams on the sensor, we send one laser beam out to the target and then... Leica Geosystems Launches Linear-mode Lidar System

Leica Geosystems, an industry leader in measurement technology, has announced the launch of TerrainMapper, its next-generation linear-mode Lidar system. As part of the RealTerrain airborne Lidar mapping solution, the new sensor builds on Leica Geosystems' sensor technology and is supported by the HxMap unified multi-sensor post-processing workflow. TerrainMapper enables users to increase point accuracy and deliver even point density across the swath, and accommodates more efficient flight planning in complex terrain such as those encountered in urban spaces and mountainous areas. The newest sensor increases both acquisition speed and processing productivity, providing efficiency and precision for any project.  Larger swath... (read more)

General Motors Snaps up LiDAR Tech Company

US auto giant General Motors has hit the accelerator on its driverless car project by acquiring LiDAR startup company Strobe. The move makes them a part of GM’s own driverless car startup, Cruise, with Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt stating it will help reduce the cost of LiDAR by nearly 100%. LiDAR is currently among the costliest components for driverless cars, and what sets the Strobe solution apart is that it reduces the entire LiDAR array down to just one chip. Vogt says reducing both the complexity and cost of LiDAR will be key to driverless car development. “Strobe’s LiDAR technology... (read more)
