Boston-based start-up company WaveSense is developing Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) for autonomous vehicles to help keep them on track during adverse weather conditions, or if the primary sensor system were to fail. By sending a pulse of electromagnetic radiation into the ground and measuring reflections that originate from scattering points – such as pipes, roots, and rocks in the surrounding “dirt”, but most importantly, soil layers and variations in moisture content – below the surface, WaveSense’s Localising GPR (LGPR) is capable of creating a 3D map of the subsurface environment. With the help of a lidar sensor, researchers have found an ancient Mayan superhighway system in the Guatemalan rain forest. The Mirador Basin Project is using a lidar system capable of mapping 560,000 points per second to provide an accurate topographical map of a large pre-Columbian Maya settlement called El Mirador, located in the north of El Petén, Guatemala. Dublin Airport is using data collected by laser scanning aircraft to accurately measure land surface elevation to help reduce the risk of flooding at the international transport hub.
