Maptek Demonstrates Resource Modelling Technology at PDAC

With the investment stream opening up, visitors to this year’s PDAC in Toronto, Canada, will be keen to explore resource estimation and project evaluation tools that can add value to mining projects. Maptek adds value to the entire mine cycle, from exploration through modelling, mine design, optimisation, production and rehabilitation. Maptek capabilities for handling large datasets are developed to make targeting easier. Evaluating multiple prospects on the desktop helps ensure money is not wasted pursuing an uneconomic project. The data remain available and processes are fully auditable and can be revisited when conditions change. Maptek’s latest Eureka 3 allows multi-source,... (read more)

Modelling Prague Castle with a UAS

Capturing a Highly Secured Site from the Air
In a recent project to obtain detailed and accurate orthoimages and 3D models to support technical staff in maintaining Prague Castle in the Czech Republic, the site was captured by UAS photogrammetry. Videos and georeferenced panoramic images were also taken as a service to documentalists and to provide the basis for virtual tours for tourists. Prague Castle and its surroundings are heavily secured sites and special permission was required to conduct the air survey. Learn more about this unique project here. By Jakub Karas, Upvision, Czech Republic From the 9th century onwards Prague Castle, located on the banks of the River... (read more)

Plowman Craven’s Spec for BIM Ready Modelling

One of the UK’s leading survey firms has produced a client ready specification for BIM surveys and deliverables. Richard Groom runs his eye over the content. Who better to write a BIM specification than a company that was there at the start. Plowman Craven’s (PCL) BIM specification first appeared several years ago and has just been updated and revamped. Like all good specifications it is an interface document that bridges the gap between the client and the surveyor. This bridge is simple and functional. At first glance 64 pages seems a little daunting but the contents are straightforward and easily... (read more)

Geospatial Modelling and Rights to Light

GW reports on last November’s RICS fascinating lecture by Andrew D. Thompson on how geomatics measurement techniques are being used in rights to light cases. Ever since man first began to live in clusters of buildings with windows there must surely have begun a test of neighbourliness. Don’t build too near my property and don’t obscure my view, would have been an early test of relations. In today’s highly developed and complex world we have necessarily developed highly sophisticated software tools, legislation, tables and guides to solve these problems. Andrew D. Thompson is a chartered surveyor who has specialised in... (read more)

Bentley Puts Modelling in the Cloud

Is the 3D model becoming the only deliverable? For construction, is photogrammetry a better option than LiDAR? How long before modelling software can calculate costs? When should you start mentioning BIM? Richard Groom reports from a day of insight. It was only near the end of a morning of presentations at Bentley’s London offices that the acronym BIM was mentioned. The reason, I was told, is that the meaning of BIM develops with people’s understanding as they progress through Levels one to three and that for those just starting out, talk of BIM as a process can be a step... 3D City Modelling of Istanbul

Issues, Challenges and Limitations
The Turkish city of Istanbul is developing a 3D city model mainly aimed at urban planning. The data sources used so far include airborne Lidar, aerial images and 2D maps containing footprints of buildings. Everybody engaged in creating 3D models of large cities faces many issues, challenges and limitations, including excessive data storage requirements, the need for manual editing, incompleteness and other data quality problems. In this article, the authors share their experiences on creating models of the city of Istanbul at the level of detail (LOD) 2 and 3. The core data for creating the 3D city model of... (read more)

Topcon and Bentley Bundle Reality Modelling Software with UAS

Topcon Positioning Group has introduced Topcon ContextCapture, powered by Bentley Systems, a reality modelling software solution that will be offered with Topcon unmanned aerial systems (UASs). The system is designed for mapping, construction and surveying professionals. It enables them to quickly turn simple photographs and/or point cloud data into true-to-life, highly detailed 3D models for use throughout a project life cycle. The offering will include Topcon ContextCapture Standard and Topcon ContextCapture Advanced, said Charles Rihner, vice president of the Topcon GeoPositioning Solutions Group. The standard package will be bundled with Falcon 8 and Sirius Basic/Pro and allows operators to process data from... (read more)

GeoSLAM and Bentley Systems Join Forces for Indoor Mobile Modelling

GeoSLAM, who specialise in 3D mobile mapping technology, and Bentley Systems, a global provider of software solutions for advancing infrastructure, has announced a partnership to enable the simple and fast production of hybrid reality models in any environment. Mark Reid, VP of Product Management at GeoSLAM, said “The simplicity of the ZEB-REVO handheld mobile mapping system has democratised laser scanning, enabling anybody to document their facility or construction site without being a survey expert. The next stage for us is to further improve how our results can be both interpreted and consumed within typical engineering and GIS workflows – and our partnership with... (read more)

Maptek Releases I-Site Studio 6 Point Cloud Modelling Tools

The latest I-Site point cloud processing tools from Maptek focus on the everyday needs of mine surveyors for fast and accurate volumes, conformance reporting, geotechnical analysis and CAD design. I-Site Studio software offers an expanding range of applications with increasing sophistication. I-Site Studio 6, released earlier this month, provides various new tools and requested enhancements. New CAD design tools include user-friendly preferences for snapping to angles and points. Other in-demand items include auto registration and alignment of scans, complex surface modelling, waviness analysis for geotechnical modelling and analysis. Surveyors are under pressure from all departments to quickly and safely survey... (read more)

UAS Platforms the Future of Successful Aerial Image Capture & Modelling

UAS (Unmanned Airborne Systems) are rapidly becoming a valuable source of data for inspection, surveillance, mapping and 3D modelling projects. Investment in the commercial UAS industry - estimated to increase by US$3.5 billion by 2024 – reveals the potential for UAS to aid or replace traditional methods of data collection. The catalyst for the high rate of UAS adoption is primarily the technological developments in microprocessor architecture and the falling costs of the manufacturing process. Even consumer-grade UAS - available for less than £1,000 – now feature sophisticated Internal Measurement Units (IMUs), GPS- and GLONASS-capable GNSS receivers, stabilised gimbals, and... (read more)
