Vercator Desktop Delivers Efficient Point Cloud Processing

Vercator Desktop software is developed by Correvate, a UCL spin-out company whose vision is to improve geospatial understanding by delivering unrivalled 3D point cloud data processing. The new software delivers fast, automatic 3D point cloud registration and data processing by exploiting an innovative approach which utilises natural features in the environment to register data sets. Accuracy is enhanced as a result with traceable, repeatable reporting. Initially targeted at the construction sector, Vercator Desktop promises to improve the productivity of BIM users in the supply chain. As those involved in the delivery of a construction project increase their appreciation of BIM,... (read more)

Sentinel-5P Atmospheric Data Processing Begins

Sentinel-5P data open to the public, and Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) has begun processing with detailed forecasts anticipated later in 2018. The Sentinels are a fleet of satellites central to Europe’s Earth-observation programme, Copernicus, addressing six main thematic areas: atmosphere, climate change, marine environment, emergency management, land and security. Atmospheric monitoring mission Sentinel-5P, the precursor to Sentinel-5, has just graduated from its official commissioning and validation phase, within which preliminary data was evaluated and instruments were calibrated. Early data was compared with the CAMS forecasting system, which allowed detection and solving of ‘teething’ issues. TROPOMI (Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument) gathers... (read more)

New Offline Post-processing Workflow for Trimble TerraFlex Software

The Trimble TerraFlex field software now supports the transfer of data between the field and office without the use of Trimble cloud services. The new software workflow – called offline data transfer – is possible through the integration of Trimble TerraFlex and the Trimble Positions Desktop add-in for Esri ArcGIS Desktop. TerraFlex is a field solution that enables mobile workers to easily collect, manage and edit their geospatial feature data. The new workflow provides an alternative to using Trimble cloud services for storing and transferring GIS feature data collected with the TerraFlex platform. In addition, TerraFlex field data collected via... (read more)

Topcon Announces Advanced Bentley Integration for Aerial Photogrammetry Processing

Topcon Positioning Group has introduced the new cloud-based photogrammetry processing powered by Bentley ContextCapture to its MAGNET Collage Web web-based service for the publication, sharing and analysis of reality capture data. The integration allows MAGNET Collage Web users who share and collaborate with scanning and mesh datasets to now process and add unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV or 'drone') photos directly to the MAGNET Collage 3D environment. The built-in Bentley ContextCapture Cloud Processing Service enables operators to upload UAV imagery direct-to-web without the need for high-end hardware requirements or IT constraints. Sharing UAV imagery projects “Operators with photos taken by any UAV will easily use the... (read more)

Monitoring 3D Urban Growth

An Innovative Approach Integrating Lidar Processing with Machine Learning
Automated measurement of the third dimension of urban growth is a crucial requirement for future urban planning and monitoring. Airborne Lidar is increasingly being used to produce regular time-based data over metropolitan areas. However, the current solutions ignore the specific needs of urban planners, are complicated to run and fail to address the problem of monitoring 3D urban growth over time at building scale. To address the current challenges, two possible solutions have been developed into an integrated procedure. Urban planners want to automatically estimate all three dimensions and model the changes to buildings, the building footprints and absolute height... (read more)

Lidar Point Cloud Segmentation

A Novel Framework for Processing Terrestrial Lidar Data
Terrestrial Lidar data has great potential to produce measurements for as-built building information modelling (BIM). Unfortunately, processing hundreds of millions of points, often contaminated by substantial noise, can be tedious and time-consuming. Normal variation analysis (Norvana) segmentation is an automatic method that can segment large terrestrial Lidar point clouds containing hundreds of millions of points within minutes. Thanks to the high speed, point density and accuracy of modern terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), as-built BIM can be conducted with a high level of detail. But TLS captures not only useful geometric information but also unwanted objects, such as people, animals or... (read more)

Leica Geosystems Launches Linear-mode Lidar System

Leica Geosystems, an industry leader in measurement technology, has announced the launch of TerrainMapper, its next-generation linear-mode Lidar system. As part of the RealTerrain airborne Lidar mapping solution, the new sensor builds on Leica Geosystems' sensor technology and is supported by the HxMap unified multi-sensor post-processing workflow. TerrainMapper enables users to increase point accuracy and deliver even point density across the swath, and accommodates more efficient flight planning in complex terrain such as those encountered in urban spaces and mountainous areas. The newest sensor increases both acquisition speed and processing productivity, providing efficiency and precision for any project.  Larger swath... (read more)

GeoSLAM Launches Desktop v3

GeoSLAM has announced the launch of Desktop v3, the latest release of their industry leading SLAM registration software. Desktop v3 builds on the success of the popular local desktop version of their SLAM processing software that was released at the start of 2016. Whilst maintaining the simplicity and ease of use of the initial software, v3 now provides users with increased functionality to view, edit, and define results. It also now incorporates a 2D and 3D viewer such that registered point clouds can be immediately viewed without moving to third-party software. Furthermore, if the ZEB-CAM camera accessory is used, it... (read more)
