UAV Monitoring of Coastal Erosion

In this case study, QuestUAV describe the use of UAV photography and photogrammetry to measure long-term erosion of the coast of north-east England. The British Geological Survey states that across England and Wales 113,000 residential properties, 9000 commercial properties and 5000 hectares of agricultural land are within areas at risk from coastal erosion. Mitigating the effects of climate change requires coastal protection studies and coastal protection measures. As every planner knows however, this increases the burden of allocating ever reducing financial resources. Accurate evaluation of the change, gleaned from historical studies, combined with best practice from current studies and environmental... (read more)

UAV-based Mapping: Safety First

While it is positive news for our industry that the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or ‘drones’) is continuing to increase, the rise has brought with it a key question: how do we ensure that drone users are operating in a safe and law-abiding manner? In recent months, there have been a number of headlines about both illegal operations and the ensuing legislation. Although these news stories have been focused on consumer drone use, we must be mindful that the same issues apply to commercial activity, according to Jean-Thomas Célette – particularly within the geospatial sector as professionals such...
