Civil Maps Releases Fingerprint Base Map for Autonomous Cars

Civil Maps’ Fingerprint Base Map, which was presented at CES 2018, has been released and offers a robust, scalable and precise solution for autonomous vehicle mapping and localisation that forms part of the company´s HD semantic map. The basemap can be updated in real-time and performs in challenging weather situations as well. Explaining the technology behind the product, the company compares it with the Shazam technology for recognising songs with your smartphone: An app grabs an audio snippet of a song, consults a database and when there´s a match, information about the song is passed to the user from the... Ordnance Survey Producing Geospatial Data Model for Malta

Ordnance Survey (OS), the first national mapping agency in the world to digitise its geospatial database, is developing the first geospatial data model for Malta. The project, known as MaltaMap, is part of a desire to build a modern Spatial Data Infrastructure across Malta’s various government departments through the SIntegraM Project. It consists primarily of the islands of Malta and Gozo. Working alongside project lead, the geospatial solution provider IIC Technologies, OS has created a detailed base map model that provides an accurate representation of the built and un-built environment of the islands. The OS team are building on their... (read more)

WaveSense Develops GPR as Alternative to Lidar for Autonomous Vehicles

Boston-based start-up company WaveSense is developing Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) for autonomous vehicles to help keep them on track during adverse weather conditions, or if the primary sensor system were to fail. By sending a pulse of electromagnetic radiation into the ground and measuring reflections that originate from scattering points – such as pipes, roots, and rocks in the surrounding “dirt”, but most importantly, soil layers and variations in moisture content – below the surface, WaveSense’s Localising GPR (LGPR) is capable of creating a 3D map of the subsurface environment. According to WaveSense, “the premise of GPR localisation is that... (read more)

Leica Geosystems and NCTech Partner to Improve Productivity and Workflow

Leica Geosystems, a global leader of measurement and reality capture technologies, has teamed with NCTech, developer of reality imaging systems, to deliver automated, colourised 3D point clouds for enhanced usability and clarity. In Cyclone, 3D point cloud processing software, users can now automatically import and align high-dynamic range (HDR) data from the iSTAR camera database, producing enhanced deliverables quicker and easier. “It is not only about attractive images but also the accuracy to which these images fit the 3D point cloud data that is paramount, and NCTech’s iSTAR camera produces high-quality HDR imaging at the accuracy everyone expects,” said Faheem Khan,... Bluesky Launches Nationwide Map of Building Heights

Aerial mapping company Bluesky has launched the first UK nationwide map providing accurate height measurement for around 40 million buildings. Created from a combination of remote sensing surveys, including data from aircraft mounted lasers (LiDAR), the Heighted Building dataset covers the whole of England, Wales and Scotland, and will help to change the way we visualise and understand the built environment. By applying height values to 41,083,111 buildings gives planners, developers, local government, utility companies and the emergency services a new perspective. Including multiple values for every residential, leisure, retail, commercial and industrial structure in mainland UK, the dataset will... (read more)

Geomni Announces New Drone Service for Properties

Geomni, a Verisk Analytics business, has announced a new service that allows customers to dispatch a licensed, qualified UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) pilot to collect imagery and data about a structure. The information from the UAV inspection is used to create a Geomni Property data package, which includes ultrahigh-resolution imagery and 3D exterior roof and wall details that fully integrate with North America’s most widely used repair estimating system. This supplements the data available from Geomni’s vast database of imagery collected across the country by its fleet of aircraft. The data can be used by estimators, architects, appraisers, inspectors, assessors,... (read more)

Capturing the Changing Face of Great Britain

The National Geographic Database of Great Britain, maintained by Ordnance Survey, is one of the largest of its kind in the world and during the past decade it has grown to contain more than 500 million unique geographic features. Since January 2010, OS has made 360 million updates to the database. Arguably, no one knows Great Britain better than Ordnance Survey. Each day, Ordnance Survey (OS) adds to the National Geographic Database (or removes if no longer there) the fixed location of new physical objects across Great Britain. OS makes more than 20,000 changes to the database each day, with each... (read more)
