Orbit GT Reveals Software to Bring Mobile Mapping Tech Indoors

Orbit GT has announced the release of Indoor Mapping v17. CEO Peter Bonne told SPAR 3D that the software has been developed to help surveyors meet the challenge of indoor mapping work without requiring the use of other applications. “Some tools are tied to a specific hardware vendor,” he said, “other tools do great point cloud work but lack image integration, and again other tools have only engineering-grade UI.” Version 17 bucks the trend by including functions for point cloud and imagery management, as well as a set of tools for “quick and easy creation of floor plans out of indoor... Stereotypes and Software Costs Hinder BIM Take-up

As even large corporate systems struggle to handle constantly evolving software and prohibitive costs restrict the uptake of BIM by smaller firms, could open source provide an answer? Chris Preston, chair of RICS Geomatics Professional Group comments. As the autumn in the UK rapidly approaches, it is a good time to take a longer look at where BIM seems to be developing. The Survey4BIM group has been beavering away in the summer to produce the “Digital plan of works” (DPOW), which I am sure you will be hearing more about soon. This has been a great effort on behalf of... (read more)

World’s First Garden City Looks to the Future with GIS Software from Cadcorp

North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC) is migrating from a bespoke web mapping application to an off-the-shelf application from British software developer, Cadcorp. The upgrade will make interactive web mapping available to more than 300 council employees. NHDC’s GIS Manager, John Barnacle, explains the move, “The Council licensed Cadcorp’s geospatial web services engine, GeognoSIS, in 2005 and Cadcorp developers built us an associated web mapping application to our own specifications based on that engine. The application has served us well for the last ten years, both as a public-facing web site, and as a back-office application. However, we are constantly reviewing... (read more)
