Bluesky Launches MetroVista 3D City Mapping Service in US

Aerial mapping company Bluesky International has launched a new 3D data capture programme in the US. The MetroVista product suite sees high resolution imagery, both vertical and oblique, captured simultaneously with high accuracy, wide scale 3D data using an advanced Leica camera. Described as the world’s first hybrid sensor, Bluesky has been operating the Leica CityMapper camera commercially for two flying seasons in Europe. Bluesky was the first aerial survey operator in Europe to deploy the new camera and has already captured MetroVista data for cities across the UK including London, Manchester, Newcastle and Bristol. The CityMapper sensor will be... (read more)

Putting Drone Mapping into Practice in Malawi

Drone technology has improved to the point where take-offs are easier than ever. Flight planning apps such as Pix4Dcapture help aspiring pilots take to the skies. But what happens next? In 2017, the government of Malawi and UNICEF launched an air corridor to test the use of drones for humanitarian purposes – the first in Africa and one of the first globally with a focus on humanitarian and development use. In this context, UNICEF Malawi hosted Pix4D for a 3-day workshop in the capital city Lilongwe, aimed at local participants from a range of different sectors. The workshop’s objective was... Septentrio Speeds up Survey Workflow with Key Upgrade

Septentrio, a leading manufacturer of accurate and reliable GPS technology, has released a key upgrade for their GPS post-processing software. Both GeoTagZ and PP-SDK now feature BaseFinder, a tool that speeds up survey workflow by automatically finding reference data needed for augmenting Global Navigation Satellite System  (GNSS) logs with sub-centimeter accuracy. BaseFinder accesses an online database of reference networks and extracts the most suitable corrections available. Septentrio has two decades of experience delivering reliable and robust RTK and PPK sub-centimeter positioning to industrial applications. PPK is often used for ground surveys with aerial drones, allowing high precision georeferencing without the need for a real-time... (read more)

CORS Networks Harnessed for Global Error Mapping

There are more than five billion satnav devices on Earth. Along with smartphones and mobile receivers, this figure includes networks of continuously operating receiver stations (CORS) used to improve accuracy. A European Space Agency-led project will harness these networks to provide an ongoing overview of satnav performance from the global to national and regional scale. “The general assumption is that global navigation satellite system (GNSS) services can always be relied on, which is true 99% of the time,” comments Michael Pattinson of Nottingham Scientific Ltd in the UK, which is developing this new project for ESA. “That’s fine for the... Street-level Laser Point Clouds and Imagery for Smart Parking

App Based on Mobile Mapping Technology
Did you know that you can waste a week or more per year hunting for a parking space in busy cities? Nowadays, smart parking apps offer a much-needed answer to the problem – and mobile mapping point clouds and imagery are core ingredients of the solution. Besides saving time by guiding you straight to an available spot close to your destination, smart parking apps also reduce unnecessary fuel consumption, air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. One such app is AppyParking by London-based AppyWay. The AppyParking app, which is available for free download for iPhone and Android devices, allows users to... (read more)

UK Hydrographic Office Starts Seabed Mapping Surveys of the Falkland Waters

In November, the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) will be conducting seabed mapping surveys of the Falkland Island coastal waters to support safe maritime trade and the development of a sustainable blue economy. The collection of hydrographic data is vital to supporting safe trade, sustainable economic growth and the protection of coastal communities from the effects of climate change, says the UKHO. As part of the UK government’s Overseas Seabed Mapping Programme, the UKHO will lead the collection of this data through vessel-based seabed mapping surveys of the Falkland Island coastal waters. Data from these surveys will initially be used to... (read more)
